I was glad back in ninety-two
When we began observing across the sky
With giant dish, good receivers too,
But then our budget disappeared, and so must I.

1st CHORUS:

Now I'm sad to say we're going away.
All our funding go to NSA.
We're shutting down, so take a good look around.
Pretty soon we're leaving Arecibo town.

NASA SETI had a plan
Seeking signals from afar, for ten long year.
Twelve months later, we get banned
By silly Congress. Now we're out of here.

2nd CHORUS:

And I'm sad to say we're going away.
You can thank the GSA.
We're shutting down, so take a good look around.
Pretty soon we're leaving Arecibo town.

So short-signted, those who vote
To shut us down, and close our radio eyes.
If we go, we miss the boat,
So we know it's time to privatize.

3rd CHORUS:

But I'm sad to say we're going away.
All our funding go to CIA
We're shutting down, so take a good look around.
Pretty soon we're leaving Arecibo town.

Six years later, I get my wish
To return with purchased observing time.
Project Phoenix at the giant dish,
And the targeted search goes back online.

FINAL CHORUS:

Now I'm glad to say we're back this way.
SETI science will have a new day.
So do not frown. Can't keep astronomers down.
SETI comes again to Arecibo town.
