Book Review:
After Contact
Summary contributed by Albert A. Harrison, Ph.D.

I am pleased to announce the release of my new book, After Contact: the human response to extraterrestrial life, New York: Plenum, 1997, (ISBN 0-306-45621-4), 363 pages, introduced at $28.95 (US) hardback.

My book focuses on the psychological, sociological, political, and cultural aspects of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. I provide a conceptual framework for organizing hypotheses about extraterrestrial life forms and civilizations, and explore likely human reactions to different search outcomes. I try to establish that anthropology, psychology, sociology, and political science are as important to the search as are the physical and biological sciences that have always played an integral role in SETI, and I encourage people from the social sciences and humanities to support SETI. My past books include Living Aloft: human requirements for extended spaceflight co-authored with Mary M. Connors and Faren R. Akins (NASA, 1985) and From Antarctica to Outer Space: life in isolation and confinement co-edited with Yvonne A. Clearwater and Chris McKay (Springer, 1991).

After Contact was released by Plenum on September 1, 1997. Additional information (including the table of contents and a peek at the snazzy cover) can be found at the Plenum Book Browser Website.

If you do read my book, I will be interested in your feedback as my long range goals include a revised edition. Thanks very much for your attention to this news release / commercial!
