LITTLE FERRY, NJ.., July 4, 1998 -- Trimble Navigation Ltd. of Santa Clara CA, a prominent supplier of Global Positioning satellite navigation equipment, has donated one if its Thunderbolt time and frequency reference units to The SETI League, Inc., grass-roots leaders in the scientific Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. The Thunderbolt GPS-disciplined oscillator provides the SETI scientists with time and frequency calibration information derived from a constellation of orbiting navigation satellites, to very nearly atomic-clock accuracy.
"The SETI League employs a global network of small radio telescopes, coordinating their activities through the Internet," explains SETI League executive director Dr. H. Paul Shuch. "To correlate our members' observations in 44 countries on six continents requires a high-precision time and frequency reference. The Trimble Thunderbolt might well have been designed with our needs in mind." Thunderbolt product manager Dennis Workman, who spearheaded the contribution, adds, "we were pleased to see The SETI League put our commercial product to such innovative use, and wish them well in their scientific endeavors."
SETI scientists seek to determine through microwave and optical measurements whether humankind is alone in the universe. Since Congress terminated NASA's SETI funding in 1993, The SETI League and other scientific groups have been attempting to privatize the research. Experimenters interested in participating in the search for intelligent alien life, or citizens wishing to help support it, should email to join_at_setileague_dot_org, check the SETI League Web site at http://www.setileague.org/, send a fax to +1 (201) 641-1771, or contact The SETI League, Inc. membership hotline at +1 (800) TAU-SETI. Be sure to provide us with a postal address to which we will mail further information. The SETI League, Inc. is a membership-supported, non-profit [501(c)(3)], educational and scientific corporation dedicated to the electromagnetic Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence.
