Executive Director Duties and Responsibilities

Pursuant to an employment contract with the incumbent Executive Director which took effect on 15 August 1997, the following document formalizes the present role, duties and authority of the Executive Director of The SETI League, Inc. This job description is subject to modification by the Board of Trustees in cooperative consultation with such individual as may serve in the role of Executive Director.

General:
Serving at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is the Chief Operating Officer for The SETI League, Inc. He or she is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the corporation, and implementing such policies as may be adopted by the Board of Trustees.

Organization:
The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the orderly growth of The SETI League's worldwide membership base. He or she provides management support to The SETI League, Inc. Field Organization, preparing the agenda for and presiding over the Annual Membership Meeting, the annual Board of Trustees Meeting, and such Regional Membership Meetings as he or she is able to attend. He or she is an officer of the Corporation, and thus serves on the Board of Trustees.

Compliance:
The Executive Director serves as Compliance Officer for The SETI League, Inc. He or she shall ensure that The SETI League, Inc. operates in compliance with its duly adopted Bylaws, Policies, and Operating Rules. When this proves infeasible or not in the best interests of The SETI League, Inc., the Executive Director shall institute and implement, subject to review and approval by the Board of Trustees, such amendments to said Bylaws, Policies and Rules as shall reflect current best practice.

Financial:
The Executive Director prepares the Annual Budget for Board of Trustees approval, and is responsible for husbanding the financial resources of The SETI League, Inc. He or she administers a monthly travel budget, and a monthly discretionary budget, as established from time to time by the Board of Trustees, to provide for the day-to-day costs of serving the administrative and technical needs of The SETI League, Inc.

Publications:
The Executive Director maintains The SETI League, Inc. website; serves as Editor and Production Manager of SearchLites, the Quarterly Newsletter of The SETI League, Inc.; edits and maintains The SETI League, Inc. Technical Manual; and is responsible for the preparation and production of all other SETI League educational and scientific publications and software.

Educational:
The Executive Director serves as Director of Educational Programs for The SETI League, Inc. He or she makes public presentations about SETI science; prepares such curriculum material as The SETI League, Inc. may publish and distribute; and conducts such workshops and colloquia for educators as his or her working budget and travel schedule may permit.

Scientific:
The Executive Director serves as Chief Scientist for The SETI League, Inc. He or she is responsible for experimental design, research coordination, data analysis, statistical hypothesis testing, submission for peer review, and final publication of all scientific research carried out under SETI League auspices, whether conducted by the membership or the staff of The SETI League, Inc.

Engineering:
The Executive Director serves as Chief Engineer for The SETI League, Inc. He or she is responsible for assessing the engineering needs of the Corporation in support of its educational and scientific mission; coordinating the engineering efforts of the membership; managing and maintaining The SETI League, Inc. engineering laboratory; disseminating the results of SETI League engineering projects to the membership, prospective manufacturers and licensees; providing patent counsel with documentation required for securing intellectual property rights to SETI League designs; and negotiating royalty and licensing terms for such intellectual property.

Development:
The Executive Director serves as Development Officer for The SETI League, Inc. He or she is responsible for developing and implementing a fundraising plan; establishing, managing and administering The SETI League, Inc. Endowment Fund; writing grant applications; furnishing granting agencies with required progress reports; and establishing, subject to Board of Trustees approval, policy related to SETI League membership dues and benefits.

Public Relations:
The Executive Director serves as the official spokesperson for The SETI League, Inc. He or she writes all Press Releases, Director's Letters, brochures and related public relations materials; grants print and broadcast media interviews as required; develops video and audio documentary material for media distribution; represents The SETI League, Inc. at all educational, scientific, and public functions; and develops public relations policy for The SETI League, Inc. subject to Board of Trustees approval.

Computer Literacy: The Executive Director is fluent in HyperText Markup Language (HTML); the Windows® 95/98/NT/2000 Operating Systems; and the Microsoft ® Office Professional Edition software suite, including the latest versions of Microsoft ® Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.

These Rules and Regulations shall have the force and effect of Bylaws of The SETI League, Inc. They may be amended as necessary from time to time by the Board of Trustees. Amendments or revisions shall become effective as of the date of their posting to the World Wide Web site of The SETI League, Inc.
